Course Description

Provides introduction to the basic concepts of Counter-Directed Energy Weapons (C-DEW); specifically discussions will include and focus on unclassified technical and scientific aspects of protecting platforms and systems from adversarial High Energy Lasers and High Power Microwave attack. Will review historical information available on countering the effects of DEW on various types of systems. Future research directions in counter-DEW technology will also be discussed. This course is intended to be an introduction to the subject and is intended to provide the attendee with a basic understanding of the technologies, issues and solutions surrounding efforts to counter directed energy weapon systems. At the end of the course, you should have a basic understanding of (1) the operation & effects of directed energy weapons, (2) various material hardening approaches, (3) atmospheric propagation effects & use in countering DEW, (4) operational techniques for implementing counter-DEW, and (5) research directions for counter-DEW. Topics include:

  • Review of DEW basics & Concepts of F2T2EA (Find, Fix, Track, Target, Engage & Assess) processes
  • Sensor and Optics Hardening
  • Basics of Propagation Effects
  • Basics for Military Operational Techniques
  • Directions in Future C-DEW Research

Intended Audience

This course is intended for Scientists, Engineers, System Analysts, Program Managers, and Military Planners. Familiarity with basic optics and physics related to high energy laser and/or high power microwave, such as that found in a two semester university level introductory physics course - is consider beneficial to understand the terminology and science terminology used. Due to venue restrictions no classified information shall be offered or discussed. US Citizenship is required in order to attend.

Instructor Biography

Mr. Peter "Rollie" Morrison, Program Officer Office of Naval Research (ONR) - With 42 years of dedicated service as a Navy Civilian, Mr. Morrison has been a pivotal force in advancing U.S. naval capabilities, particularly in the realm of Directed Energy Weapons (DEW). During his 26 years at the Office of Naval Research (ONR), he has consistently driven revolutionary developments from concept to reality. In 2002, Mr. Morrison became the first ONR Program Officer for the Electromagnetic Railgun, establishing the foundational goals for this game-changing technology. His leadership was instrumental in the historic first laser weapon demonstration at sea aboard the USS Paul F. Foster. This success paved the way for the NAVSEA LaWS program and the landmark operational deployment of the first High Energy Laser Weapon by the US Navy on the USS PONCE, a milestone achieved under his direction as the Program Officer for the Solid State Laser Technology Maturation (SSL-TM) program. Today, his responsibilities encompass all Navy science and technology programs for laser weapons and counter-DEW systems - and was awarded the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service medal. He directs research focused on achieving higher power and efficiency while developing crucial defenses against emerging adversarial threats. His leadership extends across the armed forces, serving on the Tri-Service panel for Counter-DEW as Navy S&T Chair/SME and currently serving as a Program Officer for the Marine Corps' High Energy Laser Expeditionary program. As an awarded finalist for the esteemed Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medal for his public service in 2015, Mr. Morrison continues to shape the future of naval warfare today.
