Hexagonal array wavefront estimation from perimeter phase estimates
I consider the task of wave front sensing for a hexagonal array where the emitter elements are surrounded by an annulus of passive wave front sensing elements. After estimating the phase on the annulus using a Southwell reconstructor, the atmospheric piston phase for each emitting element is estimated by extending a technique first described by Butts and Hogge. The proposed reconstruction technique is linear and straightforward to implement. Efficacy is evaluated over turbulence strength (in terms of r0), the relative size of the annulus to the center emitting elements, and gradient noise. The estimation strategy used by the Southwell reconstructor is also considered.. When considering only the mean phase over each element, I find that performance often approaches that of the least squares estimate when phase estimates are available for all elements.
