Energy Storage System Design and Development for Directed Energy Weapons
At present, readily available high-reliability energy dense ruggedized batteries for directed energy systems remain a critical enabling component of transitioning DEWs from current state to full operational capability. This paper presents an overview of the design and development process of large-format high-power lithium-ion battery systems and key considerations as they relate to powering mission critical directed energy systems. Throughout this work, three energy storage systems developed by Spear Power Systems with discharge capability reaching >800kW and energy density reaching 94 w-hr/kg are discussed in terms of mission profile and operational environment, design considerations and processes, specifications, and validation. From this work, the reader should gain insight into how directed energy power systems are specified, designed, and validated based on real world joint-effort application examples between Spear Power Systems and Raytheon Technologies.
