Innovative Magnetic Material Solutions for Navy High-Frequency Power Systems

A new program has been initiated by the Office of Naval Research that focuses on developing new magnetic materials to enhance power management efficiency in power electronic and pulsed power systems. The 4-year program, led by Northeastern University together with the Kostas Research Institute at Northeastern University (LLC), University of Pittsburgh, Dartmouth College, and the Missouri Institute for Defense and Energy (MIDE), will develop high performance magnetic materials and composites operating at frequencies from 0.5 to 5 MHz for Navy power systems and up to and beyond 250 MHz in support of directed energy systems. Materials development efforts will be guided by circuit level simulations utilizing new magnetic component models that will be developed under this program. A significant additive manufacturing component will enable cost-effective scalable production of said magnetic components. Here, we provide a brief overview of the program and solutions proposed as well as introduce high power microwave (HPM) systems of interest that are being evaluated. A robust interaction between the DE community and our research Team is desired.
This work is supported by the Office of Naval Research under Grant # N000142412513.
