Abstract: 24-Systems-222

UNCLASSIFIED, PUBLIC RELEASE

High Power Microwave Effects and Source Testing Capability and Infrastructure at the Air Force Research Laboratory, Kirtland AFB

The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) has considerable High Power Microwave (HPM) Effects and Source testing capability at the Kirtland Air Force Base Directed Energy Weapons site. The testing infrastructure supports a wide array of capabilities, from kilowatt-class amplifier effects testing via direct injection from 1 to 35 GHz to gigawatt-class HPM testing at both indoor laboratories and outdoor ranges.

These capabilities include a very large anechoic chamber (75’ x 75’ x 50’), three smaller anechoic chambers, and several outdoor ranges. We have used these facilities to develop the gigawatt-class HPM sources and systems for counter-drone applications (THOR—Tactical High power microwave Operational Responder), perform effects testing and outdoor testing vs. small drones.

We will describe these facilities and HPM testing and development capabilities in more detail in the presentation.

Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited. Public Affairs AFRL-2024-4296.
