High Powered Phased Array Fed Reflectarray

Epirus, in partnership with Florida International University (FIU), is developing an innovative High Powered Phased Array Fed Reflectarray (HP2AFR) concept that enables a system to engage with long- and short-range targets with equal effectivity. This HP2AFR overcomes the limitations of reflectors, reflectarrays and Electronically Scanned Arrays (ESAs) by utilizing an innovative reflect and scan technology while leveraging the advantages and benefits of traditional reflectarrays.

ESAs are great for short range engagements but are not cost effectively suitable for scaling for long range engagements. Classical reflector-based systems are easier to scale for larger directivity but are not readily suitable for high powers due to the singular feeding mechanism and poor aperture efficiency. A common issue of existing solutions is the trade between high power and beam agility. The Epirus-FIU team has identified an innovative solution to this challenge that combines both Phase Array Fed Reflector (PAFR) and an actively tuned reflectarray to offer the advantages of all three components (ESA, Reflector, PAFR) combined to provide the EIRP, cost effective scalability, and beam agility needed fo HPM system engagements.
