Edward Pogue
The Directed Energy Professional Society sadly announced the passing of Ed Pogue on 3 October 2015.
Ed was a stalwart of our DE community,
and an emeritus member of the DEPS Board of Directors.
Ed was the first Director of the High Energy Laser Joint Technology Office in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
After a distinguished career in the US Army, Ed joined the Los Alamos National Laboratory, and
later served the DE community with the Boeing Company in both West Hills, California and Albuquerque.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
A memorial was held on 23 November at the La Fonda Hotel in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Below is the text of a message from The Honorable Ashton Carter, Secretary of Defense, to Ed's family.
Dear Bernadette, Edward, and Conor,
Please accept my condolences on the loss of your husband and father. Ed was a major contributor to the Department
of Defense and to the nation. We will all miss him greatly.
Ed was a fellow physicist and his special expertise in high energy lasers was appreciated and respected by all of
us who knew him and worked with him. Ed led some of our most challenging and important programs for the Department,
and he did so with professionalism, energy, and an unfailing commitment to get the job done so that our servicemen
and women could be better protected.
Ed’s leadership and expertise served our nation well, in uniform as an Army field artillery officer,
in government service in the President’s Office of Science and Technology Policy, in our National Laboratories, and
in industry. Ed’s leadership of the Department’s High Energy Laser Joint Technology Program is particularly noteworthy.
Nothing can replace the loss of a beloved husband and father, but please know that Ed’s contributions to his country
were of great significance, and that his loss is being felt throughout the technical and operational defense communities
that Ed loved and contributed so much to.
With my deepest sympathy,
Ash Carter
