The Second Directed Energy (DE) Education Workshop was held
at the Manufacturing Technology and Training Center on the University of New Mexico campus on
9-10 January 2002. The main purpose of the Workshop was to define the DE educational need at
all levels and to determine a program that DEPS can pursue to address the need. A second
purpose was to consider the research needs of the Department of Defense in DE.
The output of the Workshop included a set of recommendations, action items to enhance DE education
in the areas of the three parallel sessions. These recommendations are summarized below.
K-12 DE Education Panel, chaired by Pete Latham, AFRL
- Develop teachers and coursework
- To encourage middle school student interest in science
- To advance high school general technical preparation
- To develop better associate degree technician training
- Develop laboratory tours, demonstrations, virtual tours
- Add technician training to the DEPS education program
- Develop electronic DE training resources
- Coursework
- Virtual optics kit
- Inventory existing programs and mechanisms for information exchange
- Develop awards for science teachers
- Devote upcoming DEPS Newsletter to DE education
- Determine what is happening in DE workforce development
- Develop DE Challenge Award
- Arrange DEPS and DE presence at job fairs
- Recommend educational involvement in JTO university research component
- Develop student papers at DEPS conferences and workshop
College and University DE Education Panel, chaired by John Russell, UNM
- Comprehensive study of status and need for directed energy graduates in industry, government
and academia -- proposal to NSF
- If a severe problem is discovered raise issue to Congress
- Continued education of Congress on DE educational needs
- Ensure Congress makes education a well defined responsibility of JTO
- Inventory of DE resources
- Programs and courses
- Materials
- DEPS linkage of the government and industry to universities through
- Job fairs
- Job board
- DE promotional presentations
- Marketing brochure for transition from student to DE job
- Co-ops, internships, fellowships and equipment
- Industrial affiliates programs
- DEPS sponsored small educational grants
- Promote more student participation in DE Symposium
- Travel support
- Work with graduate advisors
- Recommend that JTO require education component in university research proposals
- Require clearable grad students working on theses efforts
Double edged sword here -- could hurt basic research effort by excluding foreign students
- Expand MURI effort to universities
- Fund programs (centers) as well as individual researchers
- DE curriculum seems in place at many schools
- Develop DE intro course to attract students into DE related studies
- Develop DE capstone systems course
- Form a new sub panel for vocational training
Professional Continuing DE Education Panel, chaired by Sam Blankenship, DEPS
- Determine the need for DE short courses
- Identify the short courses that are currently available
- Advertise the publicly available short courses on the DEPS web site
- Insure that courses to meet unmet needs are developed
- Consider a CD-based short course introduction to DE systems
- Could evolve from AFIT courses
- Could include mentors within student’s organization
