Directed Energy (DE) is realizing its potential to transform military operations. Systems are
being developed to support homeland defense, national missile defense, and tactical military forces
in both High Energy Laser (HEL) and High Power Microwave (HPM) arenas. Although DE is maturing,
challenges remain. Performance can always be improved, and DE system suitability features such as
affordability, integration, packaging, and reliability need attention. DE science and technology
research have been underfunded. The aging work force may begin to slow the pace of DE research and
development unless needed steps are taken.
The Directed Energy Workshop addressed these questions from a broad, national perspective. Topics
discussed included:
- The DE revolution in military operations
- Current and projected DE programs
- DE educational needs and programs
- Joint Technology Office as a model for improving DE science and technology
Speakers
Over two dozen members of the DE community spoke at the Workshop. These speakers
included:
- Lieutenant General Joseph Cosumano, Space and Missile Defense Center
- Senator Pete Domenici, R-New Mexico
- Rear Admiral Michael Mathis, Naval Surface Weapons Center
- Mr. Ed Pogue, High Energy Laser Joint Technology Office
- Colonel Mark Stephen, Air Force Research Laboratory Directed Energy Directorate
