Directed Energy Test & Evaluation Conference 2008 |
29-31 July 2008 |
Albuquerque, New Mexico | |

Co-Hosted by the
International Test & Evaluation Association
and sponsored by:
Overview
Directed energy is an important and expanding technology area for the military.
Taken to include High Energy Laser (HEL) and High Power Microwave (HPM) systems, DE is creating a new class of
weapons. Military test and evaluation (T&E) is currently adapting to these radically new technologies.
New measures, methods, and facilities are required for adequate T&E of these DE systems.
|
Albuquerque has been host to the International Balloon Fiesta since 1973
|
The purpose of this seventh annual conference was to exchange insights, experiences,
and ideas regarding DE T&E. As major DE systems progress through the various phases of T&E,
critical questions arise regarding our ability to perform appropriate and affordable T&E.
Important issues regarding the vulnerability of other, more conventional systems are also of
great interest to the DE T&E community. Initial efforts in many of these areas have
already been made. These initial steps and proposed subsequent steps were reviewed during this conference.

Exhibit of DETEC-Developed Equipment
The Directed Energy Test and Evaluation Capability (DETEC) program began funding the development
of DE-specific test and evaluation instrumentation in 2003, and these efforts have produced unique
capabilities for DE T&E. Selected registrants for the DE T&E Conference participated in a tour
of the Albuquerque Ktech facility on Friday, 1 August and saw much of available equipment that resulted
from this program.
Integrated Atmospheric Characterization System (IACS) LIDAR - Requirements Definition Workshop
The IACS LIDAR, a DE T&E S&T program, will characterize slant atmospheric paths during DE tests, delivering
simultaneous profiles of Cn2, water vapor number density, and extinction due to aerosols. Members of the HEL T&E
community were invited to provide their inputs to the requirements document during a special workshop that was held at
the DE T&E Conference in Albuquerque from 0900 to 1100 on Tuesday, 29 July 2008.
Previous Conferences
This was the seventh in a series of conferences on this topic.
While we are sold out of the proceedings for this conference, proceedings from other DE T&E conferences are
available for purchase on the DEPS online store.
Event Committee
The Department of Defense finds this event meets the minimum regulatory standards for
attendance by DoD employees.
