The Directed Energy (DE) Systems Symposium focuses on systems aspects of DE in a limited-attendance environment. The Fifth DE Systems Symposium consists of co-located technical sessions organized by six separate conferences, with joint technical and plenary sessions to encourage discussion outside narrow technical limits. The objective of this year’s symposium is to provide a forum for the interchange of ideas and to focus on near term demonstrations of DE technology. Previous Symposia were also held in Monterey. Registrants can attend any session of the Symposium for just one registration fee.
Symposium Highlights
Luncheon Speaker Professor P.V. Zarubin Professor P.V. Zarubin will speak on the work of thousands of Soviet scientists, engineers, servicemen, and administrators who took part in numerous general and military Soviet high energy laser research and development programs between 1963 and 1980. Professor Zarubin participated in these programs, leading some of them. Tour of NPS Directed Energy Facilities Tours of Naval Postgraduate School DE facilities will be held on Friday, 16 April. The tours will include free electron laser experimental facilities including a new building, hosted by Professor Bill Colson, and beam control facilities, hosted by Professor Brij Agrawal. Specific times will be announced; space will be limited. Location and Accommodations Sessions of the Symposium will be held at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) and at the Hyatt Regency Monterey. Directions to these sites are available through their web pages. Both of the sites consist of multiple buildings. A map of the location of sessions on NPS and at the hotel will be available on site for registrants. A schematic view of the hotel looking south from a position high over NPS is available through the virtual tour on the hotel welcome page. A block of rooms at government rates for all attendees has been reserved at the Hyatt Regency Monterey. To take advantage of these rates, call the hotel at 831 372-1234 and mention that you are attending this DEPS meeting. Make your reservation early; the room block expires well before the Symposium. The hotel enforces a 48-hour cancellation policy. The Hyatt and NPS are within close walking distance. Although a shuttle bus will be available, most Symposium attendees have chosen to walk between venues. Private auto access to NPS is restricted, and parking is extremely limited. Companions Companions are always a welcome addition to any DEPS meeting. To encourage them, we offer companion meal options. Our full meal option includes all meals that are provided for regular attendees including any evening and specialty functions that may be planned. For those companions who do not want to be tied to scheduled meal functions, we also offer an evening meal option. This option, which includes only the evening and specialty event functions, allows companions access to the "fun" portions of our events. Upon arrival, those checking the "companion information needed" box on the registration will be provided a welcome packet with information on local points of interest. To assist companions in making plans for their stay, an onsite specialist will meet with interested parties on the first day of the meeting, providing access, individually or as a group, to local attractions and/or tours.
*Note: Full time students will be admitted at no fee provided they (1)
agree to work for two sessions operating computers for the presenters, or (2) are making a
presentation. If these conditions are not met, students will be required to pay the
full registration fee.
Your registration includes attendance at the technical sessions, a copy of the proceedings,
attendance at receptions, breakfast, lunch, and break refreshments. Symposium registrants may
join DEPS for $40 at registration and qualify for membership registration fees.
Short course registrations include participation in the classroom activities, student
materials, refreshments, and Continuing Education Unit (CEU) credits. Two half-day classes
can be selected for the price of the full-day class. Registration Please select from one of the following options.
Some organizations have installed web filters that prevent on-line registration from inside their facilities. If this appears to be true for you, please try again off-site or use the registration option below.
Each Conference is publishing an independent Call for Papers. There are many common features to these calls, such as common due dates for presentations and papers. (See Important Dates box to the left.) As they become available, the specific conference's Calls for Papers are available through the links below.
Proceedings will be published for each of the Conferences. These proceedings can include presentation materials, papers, or both. Some conferences require papers, and all encourage them. These should be written in the DEPS conference paper format. Papers are also of interest to the Journal of Directed Energy editors as manuscripts. Upon author approval, papers may be forwarded to the Journal for consideration. Release Forms Presentation Release Form Paper Release Form
